KUALA NERUS – Members of the public are reminded to stay away from the beaches and not to make light of the high tide phenomenon that has hit most coastal areas in the country.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief Abdul Rahim Md Din said this is because big waves can occur unexpectedly and threaten public safety.
He said that during the monsoon season, the waters off Terengganu, Pahang and Kelantan experience rough seas that can endanger all beach activity.
“However, in the districts of Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus, many people are frequenting the beaches. They may not know that being in those areas now is very dangerous.
“Local authorities have put up warning signs reminding the public against bathing and swimming in the sea,” he told reporters when inspecting areas affected by the high tide phenomenon that hit Pantai Seberang Takir here today.
Rahim said police will closely monitor the coastal areas of Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus until the situation returns to normal.
The high tide phenomenon that hit most of the coastal areas in the state since late Thursday night has caused sea water to overflow to roads and residential areas in Kuala Besut.
State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief Lt Col Che Adam Abdul Rahman said that the strong winds between 50 and 60km/h and with waves over 4.5m are expected to last until Wednesday, especially in Kuala Terengganu. – Bernama, January 2, 2021
