THE Ministry of Transport (MOT) is set to implement a more flexible policy framework enabling the e-hailing sector to roll out ride-sharing services promptly, aiming to make travel more affordable for the public.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke explained that the initiative seeks to reduce commuting costs by encouraging shared vehicle journeys.
“This proposal is not new. Previously, several e-hailing companies conducted proof-of-concept trials for such services. We will implement a more adaptable policy to allow the industry to adopt this innovation.
“This approach can ease the burden or reduce travel costs. We hope it can be implemented soon because the proof-of-concept is already there; it just needs to be scaled up,” he said during the Ministry’s Monthly Assembly on Thursday.
Loke highlighted that it is MOT’s duty to ensure the national public transport system remains efficient, reliable, and offers high levels of comfort.
He added that revisions to existing procedures and regulatory amendments are essential to enhance the country’s transport system without compromising safety or legal compliance.
