DRIVING under the influence of alcohol or drugs continues to pose a serious risk on Malaysian roads, with 31 fatal accidents recorded last year, up from 27 cases in 2024.
Bukit Aman Director of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali stressed that every incident involving intoxicated or drug-impaired drivers carries severe life-threatening consequences.
“Although the increase is not dramatic, each case results in a tragic loss of life and should not be taken lightly.
“The reality is that such incidents stem from avoidable driver behaviour, which JSPT addresses with utmost concern and seriousness, as they impact the lives of others,” he told reporters.
Muhammed Hasbullah affirmed that JSPT remains committed to strengthening enforcement, improving investigative efficiency, and intensifying road safety advocacy.
He added that tackling the issue requires a holistic approach beyond on-the-ground enforcement, focusing on raising awareness, instilling responsibility, and promoting moral values among road users.
“The attitude of individuals who continue to underestimate the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a key factor contributing to the persistence of these cases. The most effective solution begins at the grassroots level, through cultivating discipline and high personal standards within the community,” he said.
The director highlighted that roadblocks and random screening tests remain among the most effective measures to deter and detect offences.
“Such operations not only identify offenders directly but also provide a psychological deterrent effect for other road users. Consistent presence at high-risk locations during nights and weekends further enhances compliance with the law,” he explained.
Regarding investigations and prosecutions, Muhammed Hasbullah said there are no significant legal or procedural obstacles, and close cooperation with the Attorney General’s Chambers ensures that all cases referred for prosecution receive appropriate attention and action.
“Strong support from the prosecution enables investigations and legal proceedings to be conducted more smoothly and effectively.
Additionally, integrated special operations with other agencies will be intensified to ensure comprehensive and high-impact enforcement.
At the same time, awareness campaigns will be strengthened using more realistic and impactful approaches to deeply engage the public,” he said.
He added that strategic collaboration with media outlets and non-governmental organisations will continue to expand the reach of road safety messages.
“All these efforts are implemented to safeguard road users and minimise fatalities resulting from reckless behaviour,” he added. - April 9, 2026
