No tsunami threat to Malaysia, MetMalaysia reports - May 26, 2026

A 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck the North Maluku Sea in Indonesia during the early hours of Tuesday, according to Malaysian Meteorological Department.

In a statement, MetMalaysia said the tremor occurred at 4.39am local time at coordinates 1.0 degrees north latitude and 126.2 degrees east longitude.

The epicentre was located approximately 125 kilometres south-east of Bitung at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the seabed.

“Initial assessments indicate there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following the incident,” the agency said.

MetMalaysia noted that earthquakes occurring at such depths may be felt in areas close to the epicentre, although no reports of damage or injuries had been received as of Tuesday morning.

The department added that it would continue monitoring developments and issue updated information should there be any significant changes. - May 26, 2026
