MORE than 2.7 million registered voters are currently eligible to cast their ballots in the upcoming Johor state election, with the Election Commission (EC) gearing up for a large-scale electoral exercise involving tens of thousands of personnel across the state.
According to EC Secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus, a total of 2,727,926 registered voters qualify to vote in the 16th Johor State Election based on the Supplementary Electoral Roll for April 2026, which was gazetted on 21 May.
Of the total electorate, 2,703,175 are ordinary voters, while 24,751 comprise police personnel and their spouses from the General Operations Force (GOF), members of the armed forces and their spouses.
Khairul Shahril said particular attention would also be given to ensuring accessible voting arrangements for persons with disabilities.
"Of that total, 56,655 voters are persons with disabilities and require special attention from the Election Commission to ensure they are able to vote comfortably," he told Bernama.
The voter figures remain subject to revision pending updates from the supplementary electoral roll that will be considered during a Special Meeting of the Election Commission scheduled for 12 June.
The meeting is expected to finalise key arrangements for the Johor state election, including important polling dates. The commission will also determine the election timetable for the Negeri Sembilan state election during the same session.
Preparations for the Johor poll are already well underway, with the commission projecting that 42,023 personnel will be appointed and deployed throughout the election period.
"A total of 42,023 election workers are expected to be appointed and mobilised to carry out all matters related to the conduct of the state election," Khairul Shahril said.
He explained that the workforce would include 56 Returning Officers, election officials and security personnel tasked with ensuring the smooth administration of the electoral process.
The commission is currently conducting a comprehensive review and update of operational requirements, logistical arrangements and election infrastructure ahead of polling.
Khairul Shahril said the overall cost of conducting the election would depend on several operational factors, including the number of registered voters, polling centres and polling streams, staffing requirements, logistical needs and the deployment of information and communications technology.
"Fundamentally, the cost of conducting an election depends on several factors, including the number of registered voters, the number of polling centres and polling streams, the appointment of election personnel, logistical requirements, and the use of information and communications technology," he said.
He added that the commission remains committed to ensuring prudent management of public funds while maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.
"The Election Commission continually optimises the use of resources and public expenditure to ensure that every election is conducted efficiently, prudently and according to actual operational requirements," he said.
The Johor State Legislative Assembly was dissolved on 1 June, paving the way for a fresh mandate. All eyes will now turn to the Election Commission's special meeting on 12 June, when the dates for both the Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections are expected to be announced. - June 9, 2026
