AN ambulance carrying two injured men to hospital after an earlier road accident was involved in a separate collision in Besut, disrupting an emergency transfer and underscoring the risks faced by frontline medical responders on Malaysia’s roads.

The incident occurred at approximately 5pm in Kampung Cherang Meliling along the Jertih–Pasir Akar road, when the ambulance was transporting two male patients who had already been injured in a previous accident and required treatment at Hospital Besut.

Besut District Police Chief Superintendent Mohd Rozaime Ab Rahman  preliminary investigations indicate that a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) is believed to have entered the roadway from the right-hand shoulder as the ambulance approached the location.

According to police, the manoeuvre resulted in a collision between the MPV and the ambulance, causing the emergency vehicle to lose control.

“Following the collision, the ambulance lost control and veered onto the left shoulder before crashing into a parked car, causing the vehicle to fall into a drain,” Mohd Rozaime said in a statement.

Despite the severity of the crash, authorities confirmed that no additional injuries were reported among the other individuals involved in the incident.

The two patients being transported at the time were safely transferred to another ambulance, which completed the journey to Hospital Besut for further medical treatment.

“Both patients were transferred to another ambulance and sent to Hospital Besut for further treatment. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Police have appealed to witnesses or anyone with information relating to the collision to contact the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Besut District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.

Mohd Rozaime also urged motorists to remain vigilant and comply fully with traffic regulations, particularly when encountering emergency vehicles responding to incidents or transporting patients.

The incident has renewed attention on road safety and the importance of giving priority to ambulances and other emergency vehicles, whose ability to move swiftly through traffic can be crucial in safeguarding lives during medical emergencies. - June 10, 2026
