A 40-YEAR-OLD unemployed man has been charged in a Magistrate’s Court here with the murder of his friend, whose body was later found wrapped in a mattress after allegedly being left for close to two months.
The accused, Kamil Harris Mohd Abd Nasir, was seen nodding in understanding when the charge was read before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani. No plea was recorded as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
He is accused of causing the death of a 40-year-old man between 10pm on 30 March and 3am the following day at a house in Taman Seri Pandan 1, Jalan Pokok Mangga, in the Melaka Tengah district.
The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.
Prosecution was conducted by Inspector Nur Zaidah Muhamad Zailani, while the accused was unrepresented.
The court fixed 29 July for mention pending the post-mortem report.
Earlier reports said the victim’s body was discovered at about 7pm on 28 May inside a rolled-up mattress with his hands bound at a shophouse in the Pokok Mangga area.
Police subsequently arrested a man to assist investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
Investigators believe the incident stemmed from a dispute and mutual accusations that escalated into a fight between the victim and the accused while both were allegedly consuming drugs. - June 11, 2026
