MALAYSIA’S anti-graft agency has launched an investigation into the controversial transfer of three Asian elephants to Japan, following allegations of financial leakages tied to the deal.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed it has opened a probe into the relocation of Dara, Amoi and Kelat (DAK) from Zoo Taiping to Tennoji Zoo in Osaka.

The investigation is now zeroing in on the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), as well as agents involved in facilitating the transfer.

The move comes after wildlife group Hidup, on June 18, called for an official probe, alleging that payments linked to the deal — estimated at RM53 million — were not fully channelled to the government.

The group also claimed several individuals were tied to the transactions.

MACC said it is examining the alleged leakages and whether elements of corruption, abuse of power, or misappropriation may have taken place.

The commission stressed that the investigation is still at an early stage and is being carried out comprehensively. It also urged the public to refrain from speculation that could disrupt the process.

Reaffirming its stance, MACC said it will conduct the probe professionally, independently, and transparently — and will not hesitate to act if there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing. – June 22, 2026
