THE National Financial Crime Centre (NFCC) in a statement today said Tan Sri Azam Baki's membership on its Advisory Board was in his individual capacity and independent of his position as Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner.
It also said the appointment was made with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
"Azam Baki is a member of the board for three years from September 20, 2024 till September 19, 2027.
"His presence at the advisory board meeting on June 30 was in line with Act 822 as he is a valid member of the board," it said.
Yesterday, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin questioned the rationale behind the appointment of former Azam Baki as an adviser to the NFCC.
In a press conference at the parliament building, Hamzah said the appointment raises concerns given that Azam has previously been linked to several controversies, including allegations involving “corporate mafia” and share ownership issues.
“This is a question that the government must answer.”
The issue also drew attention from MCA, which called for an immediate explanation from the government.
MCA Youth Deputy Chief Mike Chong Yew Chuan said the reported appointment has raised public concern, especially as civil society groups continue to push for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into alleged “corporate mafia” networks linked to the matter. – July 3, 2026
