THE DAP will not compromise on corruption, kleptocracy or governance breaches, said Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, following party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook’s offer to resign as Transport Minister over the conditional pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Young Syefura, who is also DAP national publicity assistant secretary, said Loke’s resignation sent a clear message that the party remained consistent in opposing corruption and governance failures.
“DAP has always respected and upheld the decision of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as well as the provisions of the Federal Constitution.
“However, the resignation of a minister by the secretary-general is a clear message to all Malaysians that DAP remains consistent in its struggle against all forms of kleptocracy, corruption and leakages,” she told Utusan Malaysia.
Loke offered to resign after a three-hour meeting of the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) on Sept 19, with the party saying the move was its response to developments involving Najib’s conditional pardon and proposed house arrest.
However, DAP’s other ministers and deputy ministers will remain in the Unity Government, with Loke saying the decision was intended to maintain political stability.
Young Syefura said Pakatan Harapan’s priority remained the welfare of the country and its people rather than political interests.
“The people’s agenda takes precedence over the political agenda.
“If political instability occurs when the country is on the right track, the people will be the ones who lose out. Therefore, the priority is the well-being of the country and the people,” she said.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said he understands Loke’s position, describing him as a person of principle who has consistently opposed anything that could give the impression that the government is weak or lenient towards corruption. Anwar said he would meet Loke before deciding on the resignation offer. - September 22, 2026
