THE Melaka State Legislative Assembly will be dissolved tomorrow, paving the way for the state's 16th election.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh announced the dissolution at a special press conference at Seri Negeri today.
He said Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam consented to the dissolution following an audience earlier today.
Rauf’s announcement puts an end to weeks of speculation on the next state polls, and the dissolution sets the stage for the Election Commission (EC) to determine key dates for the state election, including nomination and polling.
The current state government's mandate is due to expire on Dec 27.
It will be the third state election this year, following Johor and Negeri Sembilan. Barisan Nasional (BN) retained Johor, while the BN-PN pact reclaimed Negeri Sembilan from Pakatan Harapan (PH).
In the 2021 Melaka election, Barisan Nasional secured victory by winning 21 of the 28 seats, while Pakatan Harapan won five and Perikatan Nasional won two.
The upcoming state election is expected to see crowded contests, with newcomer Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) joining the race and contesting 15 seats. - September 22, 2026
