MIRI – A four-wheel drive vehicle with three people inside plunged into a 100m-deep ravine while travelling in rainy weather in the remote mountains of Limbang district in northern Sarawak.
One person died and two others were rescued in the incident about 11pm last night.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said in its updates today that the deceased has been identified as a 20-year-old native named Delvin Dinisius.
He was travelling with two other men in the vehicle along the timber road at Bukit Kilo, near the Long Napir settlement, when the vehicle overshot the road and plunged into the ravine.
Rescue teams stationed in Medamit and Limbang were deployed after receiving an alert from the police, said the department.
Rescue operation head Awang Ibrahim Amir said the journey to the incident site was about two hours.
He said the rescuers had to descend the steep slopes in darkness in the heavy rain and fog.
Delvin is believed to have died at the scene.
The two trapped in the wreckage were rescued after rescuers used special equipment and tools to cut through and pry open the doors.
Long ropes and stretchers were used to haul the victims up the hillslope. – The Vibes, January 14, 2021
