GEORGE TOWN – Penang has directed its two city councils to step up enforcement to ensure residents abide by the standard operating procedures in view of the four-digit daily cases.

Despite a 99% compliance rate among commercial and residential premises, state executive councillor Jagdeep Singh Deo has urged Penang Island City Council and Seberang Prai City Council to step up their enforcement efforts.

“While we are conducting checks, the cases continue to rise. It is unacceptable. We must improve and the ratepayers must cooperate for their own sake.

“Prevention is better than cure,” Jagdeep told a media briefing today.

A total of 137 premises, including high-rise residential buildings, have been inspected by the 5,000-strong enforcement divisions of the two city councils.

However, Penang continues to reel in three-digit daily cases, recording 120 new infections today.

At present, there are nine active clusters while 12 other clusters have ended – Damar Laut, Pengkalan Barat, Penang Remand Prison, Assumption, Rajawali, Bayan, Permatang, Summer, Rengas, Tembaga, Sri Pasir, and Intan.

At the same time, five new clusters have emerged – Symphony Magazine, Rawa Akasia, May Indah, Lis Putih, and Sentosa Residensi. – The Vibes, January 17, 2021
