19-year-old claims trial to raping minor at Miri police lock-up

MIRI – A 19-year-old yesterday claimed trial after being charged with raping an underage girl at the Miri police station lock-up last month.

The Borneo Post reported that special court judge Jason Juga fixed March 10 for pretrial case management and allowed Zuraini Razzi Raini to be released on bail of RM15,000 with two local sureties.

The accused was also ordered to report himself at Miri central police station once every two weeks pending the pretrial hearing.

According to the facts of the case, he was accused of raping the girl in the toilet of a lock-up cell at the police station at 4am on January 9.

He was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years and whipping, upon conviction.

It was reported that deputy public prosecutors Musli Abdul Hamid, Nurfadzlin Mahmad Zulhasnan, Danial Ilham and Rishan Kumar Ragandaran appeared for the prosecution, while counsel Ranbir Singh Sangha and Gurvir Singh Sandhu represented the accused.

Yesterday, Ranbir told the court that Zuraini had been beaten while in custody and asked for the accused to be allowed to go to hospital for treatment. – The Vibes, February 10, 2021
