KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s view that Parliament can convene during the emergency proves that he prioritises the supremacy of the constitution, said Umno information chief Shahril Sufian Hamdan.
In a statement tonight, he said every branch of the government, including the executive, must abide by the principles of the Rukun Negara.
Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah protects his subjects by upholding the parliamentary democracy system, said Shahril Sufian.
Istana Negara, in a statement this evening, said Parliament can sit during the emergency on a date deemed appropriate by the king, based on the advice of the prime minister.
Meanwhile, Umno advisory council chairman and Gua Musang MP Tan Sri Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said: “In actual fact, the Agong has the authority to call for Parliament to convene even without being advised by the prime minister, what more during a state of emergency.”
The king proclaimed the emergency on January 12, with the order to be in effect until August 1, so as to contain the Covid-19 threat. – Bernama, February 24, 2021
