GEORGE TOWN – DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng was questioned for an hour by the police here over a joint statement he issued with two other Pakatan Harapan leaders on the emergency proclamation.
Lim arrived at the Northeast police headquarters around noon with his lawyer R.S.N Rayer, with Jelutong MP telling The Vibes that Lim fully cooperated with police throughout.
“We went in to record our statement and I think other leaders such as (PKR president Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim had also provided a statement.”
It was learnt that Amanah president Mohamed Sabu will be giving his statement soon. Anwar was questioned on February 26.
The investigation is being carried out under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998’s Section 233.
Section 505(b) refers to the making, publishing or circulation of any statement with intent to cause fear or alarm to the public. Section 233 is for the improper use of network facilities or network services.
Rayer urged the police to investigate Perak DAP’s police report lodged against Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan for disallowing Parliament to sit during the state of emergency despite the decree by the king.
“He is going against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over this matter,” Rayer said.
The opposition trio issued a statement on behalf of the PH presidential council saying that the suspension of Parliament and state assemblies at a time when the executive and judiciary can still function normally will disrupt the provision of checks and balances, inhibit national democracy and deny the voices of the people.
They also told Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin not to ‘hide behind’ Covid-19 and burden the people with an emergency declaration in order to save himself.
The PH leaders rejected the rationale given by Muhyiddin that the emergency declaration was to save the country from the pandemic.
The council said the emergency will affect efforts to revive the economy by hampering investor confidence, and will not help overcome the issues of unemployment and loss of income.
On the same day, Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz withdrew his support for Muhyiddin’s Perikatan Nasional government, making him the second Umno lawmaker to do so, days after Machang’s Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub did the same. – The Vibes, March 11, 2021
