LANGKAWI – Ayer Hangat rep Datuk Juhari Bulat has proposed a new ferry terminal here to reduce travel time from Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis by 30 minutes.
It will also ease congestion when borders reopen and tourists return once the Covid-19 threat is contained, he said.
The Kedah speaker said the new terminal could be built in Tasek Apau near Kisap, about 3km from Kuah town.
“We can cut travel time from Kuala Perlis and Kuala Kedah by 30 minutes.
“Those who suffer from seasickness can come aboard through Kuala Perlis, as it will take only 30 minutes.”
The proposal has been submitted to the Marine Department and state development agencies, he said.
Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, too, has been informed of the matter.
According to the Langkawi Tourism City Council, some 2.3 million people arrived on the holiday island by ferry in 2014.
In 2018, tourist arrivals stood at 3.6 million.
Langkawi Tourism Organisation chairman Ahmad Pishol Isahak said the idea of another terminal was first mooted a few years ago, but nothing came out of it.
“An increase in trips as a result of having two terminals will boost tourism and revenue.”
Innovative and fresh ideas are needed to take tourism to the next level, he said, given that Langkawi has been hit hard by the pandemic.
Meanwhile, the Langkawi Development Authority is scouting for a new chief executive to succeed Hezri Adnan following the end of his contract.
