KUALA LUMPUR – A by-election must be held for the Batu Sapi federal seat after the death of incumbent Datuk Liew Vui Keong, said Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun today.

The Election Commission must fill the seat within 60 days from the date the seat had been declared vacant in line with Article 54 (1) of the Federal Constitution, Azhar said in a statement today.

He added that he has issued a notice to EC chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh dated today of Liew’s death last Friday. The EC has yet to declare the seat vacant.

Azhar told The Vibes that there is no reason to postpone the polls as the law does not provide such provisions.

Liew, who was also a former de facto law minister, died in Kota Kinabalu due to lung infection. He was 60 years old. – The Vibes, October 6, 2020
