NIBONG TEBAL – Penang’s two city councils have conducted 1.7 million spot checks up till March 30 at construction sites across the state, to ensure compliance with Covid-19 standard operating procedures.
State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo said the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has conducted 783,456 checks, and Seberang Prai City Council (MBSP), 915,739.
“We registered 200 new (Covid-19) cases (yesterday) in the state, and have so far recorded a total of 16,069 cases.
“Currently, 972 cases are active, compared to 15,076 recoveries and 21 deaths.
“The nation has recorded a total of 345,500 cases with yesterday’s 1,482 new cases,” he said after visiting the Taman Sejahtera hardcore poor rent-to-own housing scheme in Simpang Ampat near here today.
The project was stopped temporarily for failing to adhere to the SOPs.
“The two city councils have so far closed 1,551 premises for failing to follow the SOPs.
“MBPP has closed down 12 premises, and MBSP, 1,519 premises.
“I am glad that the Taman Sejahtera housing project for the hardcore poor is 100% completed, and the certificate of completion and compliance is expected in the second week of April.
“The project for 41 units commenced in 2018 at a cost of RM5.5 million, and it took 36 months to be completed.”
Under the Penang Vision 2030 development plan, he said, the state aims to build 220,000 houses of various types, including affordable units to meet residents’ needs.
