MIRI – Sarawak has raised the alarm after a surge in Covid-19 infections among those aged between 20 and 40.
State Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian today said the concern follows the state Health Department’s latest data.
“A lot of recent Covid-19 cases in Sarawak involve locals aged between 20 and 40.
“These are mostly working adults, who are very mobile, with extensive movements and physical contact with other people.
“The rate of Covid-19 transmission in this age bracket is increasing.”
However, he stopped short of disclosing the infectivity rate for the said age range.
Dr Sim also sits on the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee.
He said in recent weeks, Covid-19 deaths in the state involved young people.
For example, two virus-related fatalities involved individuals in their 30s yesterday, he added.
“Many of these young victims failed to seek early treatment when they show symptoms of Covid-19.
“As a result, they were brought in dead. It was too late to save them.”
Dr Sim warned those who are suffering even mild symptoms to seek immediate medical attention.
This also applies to those who are young and think they are physically strong, he added.
