KUALA LUMPUR – Another day, another investigation into celebrity Noor Neelofa Mohd Noor – this time, for failing to wear a mask during her appearance at the Seremban magistrates’ court yesterday.
Seremban district police chief Mohd Said Ibrahim told The Star that a report has been lodged over the matter, following a news report that went viral.
The article carried a photo of the actress, donning a niqab but without a mask on, outside the courtroom.
“We have received a police report claiming that she failed to adhere to the Health Ministry's standard operating procedures, which apply to all individuals,” Said was quoted as saying.
He said the investigation is being carried out under Section 269 of the Penal Code and Rule 17(1) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Regulations (Conditional Movement Control) 2021.
Neelofa and her husband Muhammad Haris Mohd Ismail were in court over charges of violating conditional movement control order (CMCO) standard operating procedures.
The couple pleaded not guilty and were granted bail.
Neelofa was granted a RM5,000 bail despite the prosecution applying for RM20,000, while Haris, who faces two charges, was granted a RM10,000 bail. The court set June 4 for remention.
Bernama yesterday reported Nilai police chief Mohd Fazley Ab Rahman as saying the pair will be charged under Regulation 19 of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures Within Infected Local Areas) (Conditional Movement Control) (No.4) (Amendment) (No.12) Regulations 2021.
He said Haris’ two charges are for failing to scan the MySejahtera QR code or register manually at a carpet shop in Nilai earlier this month, and for not wearing a mask in a public place.
“Neelofa will be charged with failing to comply with CMCO SOPs by not scanning the MySejahtera QR code or registering manually on the same premises.”
Following her repeat offences, calls have grown louder for Neelofa to be jailed.
A change.org petition, titled “Langgar SOP: PDRM, Penjarakan Neelofa Segera” (SOP Breach: PDRM, Imprison Neelofa Immediately), describes the Kelantan-born actress as having flouted the SOPs on various occasions, contributing to the hampering of national efforts to contain Covid-19.
“The offences, committed without any remorse, have caused the emergence of double-standard laws applied to her,” posted the petitioner, “Hentikan Double Standard”.
The petition initially targeted 35,000 signatures, but has moved the goalpost to 75,000. At the time of writing, it had more than 58,000 signatures. – The Vibes, May 21, 2021
