MIRI – Cops here are conducting raids on cockfighting activities in three districts on the first day of Gawai Dayak.

So far some 20 people have been arrested and issued compounds for carrying out cockfights which contravene the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs), besides being an act of cruelty towards animals.

Police in the central districts of Tatau, Kapit and Julau had acted on public tip-offs and carried out the raids.

Five were detained in Julau while 13 others, in Tatau and Kapit.

Police also seized the items used in the cockfighting activities.

Cockfighting is a blood sport popular among the Dayaks especially during the Gawai harvest festival.

It has prior to this caused several Covid-19 outbreaks especially in central Sarawak.
