KUALA LUMPUR – There is no need for a royal commission of inquiry into Selangor’s long-running water disruption woes, said Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man today.
“We are not at the stage for an RCI yet. The ministry will increase equipment and facilities for our staff members, and conduct enforcement activities with police,” the environment and water minister told a press conference today.
Long-term measures will be undertaken to ensure continued supply even when there are water sources affected by pollution.
“The ministry is considering increasing the number of riverside reservoirs, which will give us a second water source in case our rivers get polluted,” said Tuan Ibrahim.
Such reservoirs will provide up to two weeks’ supply.
Odour pollution was detected in Sg Selangor early today, leading to operations being halted at four water treatment plants and five million Selangor residents suffering dry taps.
The plants – Sg Selangor Phases 1, 2 and 3, and Rantau Panjang – are expected to resume operations in one to two hours, with supply to be restored within 24 hours.
In a statement, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd said there has yet to be a steady reading of 0 TON – which must be attained for treatment plants to resume operations – after three rounds of testing as at 2pm.
It said it has activated 91 water tankers, 24 static tanks and 21 public pipes for affected residents. – The Vibes, October 19, 2020
