GEORGE TOWN – A day after voicing disapproval of the white flag campaign, Penang mufti Datuk Seri Wan Mohd Salim Wan Mohd Noor has apologised to all parties for his statement, which has allegedly caused confusion among the masses.
Salim said his initial disagreement with the movement was simply because he was worried it could undermine the Muslim faith.
“This can happen if the action is motivated by a despairing attitude towards God’s grace and impatience with God’s tests.
“It would have never crossed my mind to prevent such an action if it was thought to be an effective way to raise awareness to the authorities and the public, as well as facilitate all parties to extend assistance to those in need,” he said in a statement today.
The Penang Mufti’s Department yesterday said it does not agree with the proposal to fly the white flag to solicit help from the public.
Wan Salim said the action is considered inappropriate as it reflects an attitude of despair and giving up due to the difficulties faced.
“In my statement yesterday, I also urged the authorities and government agencies to act more aggressively to help those affected.
“In fact, I also called on government-linked companies and private companies to help alleviate the hardship of the group,” he said. – The Vibes, July 2, 2021
