KUALA LUMPUR – Despite Tan Sri Annuar Musa’s statement that the Muafakat Nasional (MN) meeting tonight was cancelled at the last minute on the National Security Council’s (NSC) orders, a source told The Vibes that talks between Umno and PAS leaders are ongoing.
However, the source, who is close to the Umno leadership, did not reveal the names of those in attendance.
“I was told that there would be no statement from Umno unless PAS is willing to speak.”
MN joint secretary-general Tan Sri Annuar Musa earlier told reporters that the meeting was called off due to “instructions from the NSC”.
He did not provide details, but it is presumably due to the Covid-19 threat.
At 11.10pm, The Vibes spotted PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad and Umno Youth chief Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki among those leaving the Putra World Trade Centre here, but the two kept mum when probed on the outcome of their meet.
Another meeting scheduled for tomorrow in Pahang is also said to have been called off.
On Thursday, Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said PAS must decide whether to stay in Perikatan Nasional (PN) or build up MN with Umno, as the Islamist party cannot play both sides for the sake of its political survival.
Annuar this afternoon said MN was expected to discuss Bersatu joining the alliance at tonight’s meet.
Last week, Umno said it is mulling withdrawing its support for the ruling PN, and will set out fresh conditions for continued cooperation. – The Vibes, October 19, 2020
