GEORGE TOWN – The state government has announced an empowerment programme to reboot its tourism industry, which has been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In a statement today, state executive councillor for tourism and creative economy (Petace) Yeoh Soon Hin said the programme will be based on the success stories of other countries such as Indonesia and Canada.
“Petace is researching policies implemented in Indonesia and Canada, and hopes to emulate their successes in establishing an active creative ecosystem that boosts the state’s gross domestic product.
“The state government’s main aim in restructuring the industry is to establish greater synergy between the distinctive yet interrelated fields of arts, culture, and heritage, while giving importance to the potential areas of architecture, design, fashion, music, etc.
“The programme is expected to be launched in the last quarter of this year,” he said.
As Penang celebrates George Town World Heritage Day, Yeoh said he believes it is a good occasion for the state to reflect on its progress, particularly in the heritage scene, now given greater prominence under the 10-month old creative economy portfolio.
The portfolio was introduced in September last year, and aims to create more job opportunities, attract new investments, nurture new and existing talents, and empower the local community through the development of the tourism and creative economy.
“In conjunction with George Town’s 13th anniversary as a Unesco World Heritage Site, Penang is happy to share that we have been working on educational and outreach efforts by connecting with practitioners and encouraging cross-sector collaboration.
“Petace is drafting long-term strategies for creatives that will address the core areas of digitalisation, capacity building, and collaboration,” he added.
Yeoh also said that Penang is on track to becoming a sustainable creative hub of the region through holistic strategies, effective programmes, and outstanding communities by agencies such as George Town World Heritage Incorporated. – The Vibes, July 7, 2021
