MIRI – A senior state politician questioned why Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin should step down since no other lawmaker commands the majority support of the Dewan Rakyat.
Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) information chief Adam Yii said despite widespread speculation, the prime minister need not resign.
“Why must he resign now as the confidence vote is pending? At this juncture, no person or political party has the majority to form the government. So, why must the prime minister resign now?
“Whoever takes over will still be a minority government. Wait till the confidence vote, and then see what happens. For now, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) maintains status quo,” he told The Vibes today.
The Miri Mayor said the ruling state coalition holds a federal tie with Perikatan Nasional for the sake of administering the country. SUPP is part of GPS.
Other GPS component parties are Parti Rakyat Sarawak, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu and Progressive Democratic Party.
It has been reported that Muhyiddin will tender his resignation to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong tomorrow morning.
Earlier, Bersatu supreme council member Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof had told MalaysiaKini that the leader informed the party of his intention to quit in a meeting at the PN headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
Muhyiddin had on Friday made a last-ditch plea to remain in power, urging opposition lawmakers to lend him support in Parliament.
In what appears to be an attempt to cling to his position amid growing talk of a loss of majority, the embattled prime minister promised to implement a slew of changes and policies.
However, Pakatan Harapan and Umno had panned his offer, describing it as a daylight bribery attempt on national television. – The Vibes, August 15, 2021
