KUALA LUMPUR – Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has accepted the resignation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister effective today.
The king also decreed that Muhyiddin will serve as the caretaker prime minister until a new person is appointed to the post.
In a statement posted on the Istana Negara’s Facebook page, the king also opined that the dissolution of Parliament to conduct the 15th general election will be not the best option after taking into consideration the safety and well-being of the people.
The king had also confirmed received feedback from Election Commission chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh that at least 484 from 613 state constituencies are currently under the Covid-19 red zone.
“His Majesty has also noted that the country's health facilities remain under tense conditions.”
The ruler expressed hope that the “political quagmire” that continues to prolong without a solution and has disrupted the country's administration can be resolved for the sake of the people and the economy currently being threatened by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In accepting the resignation, Al-Sultan Abdullah also expressed his appreciation to the Pagoh MP for his services under the Perikatan Nasional administration from March 1, last year, especially in battling the Covid-19 pandemic.
“His Majesty understands and respects the system, and the country’s legal process in accepting any decisions made by Muhyiddin based on the supremacy of the federal constitution and the rule of law.”
Prior to granting an audience to Muhyiddin at 12.30pm today, the king also granted audiences to the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali, Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun and Ghani at 11am. – The Vibes, August 16, 2021
