KUALA LUMPUR – The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah was seen entering Istana Negara this afternoon ahead of the special Conference of Rulers meeting to discuss the possible emergency declaration mooted by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday.

His Majesty’s motorcade accompanied by dozens of police outriders was seen entering the compound at approximately 1.30pm, an hour ahead of the meeting that is scheduled to start at 2.30pm today.

At least one other motorcade with was seen entering the palace shortly after. Sinar Harian reported that it was Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

The last to arrive was reportedly Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah whose motorcade was seen at the palace at 2.30pm.

The Agong is seeking input from the other Malay rulers on the government’s plan to declare a national emergency, purportedly to tackle the escalating Covid-19 situation.

Earlier reports said the meeting, however, was informal and did not include state governors or other politicians.

On Friday, Muhyiddin was granted an audience with the Agong at Istana Abdul Aziz in Kuantan, after chairing a special cabinet meeting where a majority of its members had agreed to the government’s plan to impose an emergency rule.

However, scores of Muhyiddin’s political rivals and civil society groups have accused him of clinging on to power as he faces leadership challenges from within his Perikatan Nasional coalition and the opposition. – The Vibes, October 25, 2020
