KUALA LUMPUR – The lorry driver who slammed his vehicle into five vehicles at the turn-off near Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (Jalan Ipoh) here today, had tested positive for drugs.
The 2.40pm incident saw the 25-year-old lorry driver losing control of his vehicle before careening into five vehicles including two Perodua Myvi, a Proton X70, Honda HRV and Peugeot 208 FL that was in its path at the traffic light junction.
It is learnt that two more vehicles sustained minor damage as a result of the collision.
In a statement, today, Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Sarifudin Mohd Salleh said initial investigations revealed that the sand lorry was heading from Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim (Jalan Duta) to Sentul.
He said the accident caused a 45-year-old driver of a yellow-coloured Myvi to sustain light injuries and be admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital’s green zone for further treatment.
It was a miraculous escape for the driver of the Myvi that was badly damaged, being the first vehicle to be struck by the lorry.
Members of the public were able to pry open a gap for the driver, who sustained cuts and bruises, to climb out of.
“The drivers of the other vehicles have received treatment and no serious injuries were reported. All of them were allowed to leave except for the driver who was detained for further investigations.
“Further checks revealed that while the suspect was not under the influence of alcohol, he was confirmed positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine following a urine test,” he said.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 44(1A) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
