KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will meet former Sg Udang assemblyman Datuk Seri Idris Haron over his allegations about sand royalty payments to the federal government and a project monopoly.
In a statement, the anti-graft body urged any party with information or evidence on corruption and malpractice in relation to the issue to come forward.
On Tuesday, Idris said there are Umno leaders in Melaka involved in scamming Putrajaya out of sand royalty payments and “monopolising projects”.
He told Astro Awani that these are among the factors behind his withdrawal of support for the Umno-led state government.
It is to “save Umno from being rejected by the people in the next general election”, he said.
If Umno continues to have leaders like these, their greed is likened to eating out of their right and left hands, while staring at other food on the table, namely economic projects in Melaka.
“Thousands of cubic metres of reclaimed sand were brought in but declared in low quantities, cheating the federal government in the form of royalties. Everything is happening clearly.
“This is a scam that will cause Umno to be rejected outright in the next elections. I believe, and I am confident, that the people are aware of this fact.”
Idris is among four former assemblymen who have withdrawn their backing for Umno’s Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md Ali, who is now caretaker chief minister.
The other reps are Umno’s Datuk Nor Azman Hassan, Datuk Noor Effandi Ahmad of Bersatu, who has since been sacked by his party, and independent politician Datuk Norhizam Hassan Baktee.
Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam dissolved the state assembly effective Monday, triggering a snap election in 60 days.
Opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan has said it will challenge the dissolution in court, as well as the legitimacy of the caretaker state government. – The Vibes, October 7, 2021
