MIRI – The Baram People Action Committee is baffled that the state is officially entering the endemic stage when quarantine centres treating Covid-19 patients remain full.
Its chairman Philip Jau told The Vibes that categories 1 and 2 patients are filling up quarantine centres daily.
“The state leaders must not toy around with the health status, as it involves the general population.
“Look at the daily data of admissions into quarantine centres and we can see hundreds of patients in hospitals in Kuching, Miri, Sibu, and Bintulu and dozens of new cases reported even in Long Lama and Marudi clinics in Baram.
“How can the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee announce that Sarawak is preparing to enter the endemic stage of Covid-19 under such circumstances?” he asked.
The SDMC secretariat yesterday evening said Sarawak is going to move from Phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan to Stage 4.
“From the pandemic stage 3, we will soon enter endemic stage 4. We will see more socio-economic sectors reopen fully.
“We will open up our bus services totally for express and stage services (long-distance and local district services,” the secretariat said in a press statement.
Jau said Sarawak saw 19 more Covid-19 fatalities aged between 40 and 96 yesterday.
Six people were brought dead into hospitals in Betong (three), Kuching, Lawas and Bintulu (one each).
Of the 19 deaths, seven were in Betong, four in Sibu, three in Kuching, two in Limbang, and one each in Miri, Bintulu and Sri Aman.
There were 527 new infections, with Kuching recording 190 new cases, Miri 96, and other districts several dozen cases each.
Jau warned the state’s leaders against declaring it as being in the endemic stage only to justify their decision to call for the 12th state elections, when the reality on the ground shows a high risk of infections and fatalities. – The Vibes, November 5, 2021
