KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia saw another increase in its daily Covid-19 caseload with 6,380 infections recorded today, said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a press statement, he said this brings the cumulative number of cases to 2,563,153.

The number of new cases today is slightly higher than yesterday’s 6,288 infections.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry’s CovidNow website recorded 68 deaths, including 12 brought-in-dead cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said the country saw 5,760 recoveries, bringing the total discharged to 2,472,283.

Only 28 of the new infections were imported, he added.

He said only 98 of today’s new cases (1.5%) are in Categories 3, 4, and 5, while the remaining 6,282 (98.5%) are from Categories 1, and 2.

A total of 541 cases are under intensive care, while 263 required breathing assistance, he said.

Dr Noor Hisham also said the ministry has detected 88 cases involving variants of concern. He said the Faculty of Medicine detected 65 cases from the Delta variant (B.1.617.2), while Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Molecular Biology Institute logged 23 cases from the same variant.

He said the country has seen 3,658 cases from the Delta variant, 226 from the Beta variant, and 14 from the Alpha variant.

Dr Noor Hisham noted that there are 20 variants of interest cases, including the Theta variant (13), Kappa variant (four), and Eta variant (three).

He said so far, Malaysia has seen 5,867 clusters, including nine new clusters today.

Clusters that have ended stand at 5,621, while 246 remained active. – The Vibes, November 18, 2021
