KUALA LUMPUR – In light of the worst flooding in the country in decades, Human Resources Development Corporation (HRD Corp) has embarked on a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to extend a helping hand to victims in badly affected districts in Selangor.
Speaking to The Vibes, HRD Corp chief operating officer Datuk Ariff Farhan Doss said the organisation’s 80 staffers have been mobilised to Hulu Langat, Klang, Sg Buloh, and Shah Alam since yesterday.
“We also have 30 students from Mahsa University joining us today. Primarily, we will clean houses in affected areas.
“Yesterday, we served 200 houses and cleaned 20 houses. We also provide food and essentials for kitchens.
“Today, we hope to clean 100 houses in all four districts. We also have food supplies for 800 homes. The initiative will continue daily until the end of the week.”
He said the CSR project is fully funded by board members and well-wishers.
“Other than training, the constitution limits us from using organisation funds. So we are not spending anything.
“But we are very fortunate to have a very good board. We have the senior management, the human resources minister, and our own staffers who have given us a lot of support.
“With the sum we have collected, we have bought water jets, pails, cloths, and everything needed to clean the houses.”
Although the organisation has previously coordinated flood relief and rebuilding projects, Ariff said this is the first time it has been done at such a scale.
“We have done flood relief before, but we have never seen devastation like this.
“Klang Valley residents are not used to this and they were evidently not ready for it as the floods took them by surprise.”
He is now calling for volunteers to join his team to help in stricken areas in Selangor.
“We definitely need more volunteers. I hope more people will come forward to volunteer to help with cleaning up, not just to donate money.
“Please come to our headquarters in Bukit Damansara to register. We leave the HQ every day at 10am, so come before that to join our team. We are more than happy to have them with us along the way.
“We need to help the victims to get back on their feet as soon as possible because the sooner their homes are returned to normalcy, the sooner they can get back to work and take care of their families,” he said.
Malaysians who would like to support this relief effort can do so in two ways.
They can donate essential items such as dry foods, bottled water, toiletries, pillows, duvets and blankets, clothes, and more. These can be dropped off at the organisation’s collection centre at the ground floor of Wisma HRD Corp in Damansara Heights here.
HRD Corp also welcomes individuals who would like to volunteer their time, effort, and energy in the relief effort. They can do so by filling out their details here and come to Wisma HRD Corp daily before 10am.
