KUCHING – Budget 2021 should have a higher allocation for Sarawak, said local party leader Datuk Sebastian Ting.
The Borneo Post quoted the Sarawak United People’s Party secretary-general as saying the RM4.5 billion in development expenditure set aside for the state is only a small increment from the RM4.4 billion allocation this year.
Nevertheless, he lauded the Budget as “inclusive” and “necessary”.
“Overall, I think the tabled Budget is inclusive, people-centric and necessary.
“I believe it is the biggest Budget ever at RM322.54 billion, which is RM25.54 billion more than the last Budget.”
He expressed hope that Putrajaya will increase the special grant to Sabah and Sarawak under Article 112D of the federal constitution in the future.
Ting, who is also state tourism, arts and culture assistant minister, said Covid-19 has led to the number of visitors to Sarawak plunging 65.7% to 1.156 million this year from 3.367 million in the same period a year ago.
He cited United Nations World Tourism Organisation data showing a 70% drop in international arrivals worldwide for the year up to August.
“Budget 2021 is vital to ensure the survival of local businesses.
