JOHOR BARU – The Kuala Lumpur High Court has granted former Bangladeshi Ambassador to Malaysia Mohammed Khairuzzaman an interim injunction to prevent his deportation.

Khairuzzaman contends that he faces persecution in the event he returns to Bangladesh.

The interim injunction was awarded to Khairuzzaman during his habeas corpus trial aimed at disputing his detention by the Immigration Department, Malaysiakini reported.

The high court granted the temporary injunction as Khairuzzaman submitted that he is at risk of being deported.

The federal government, home minister and Immigration Department director-general were named as respondents to the case.

Khairuzzaman, who has been living as a refugee in Malaysia, was caught by authorities on February 9.

It is understood that the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees recognises Khairuzzaman’s status as a refugee.

The Dhaka press reported that Khairuzzaman is an accused in a murder involving three Bangladeshi leaders, and was later acquitted in 2004.

He served as ambassador to Malaysia from 2007 to 2009. – The Vibes, February 15, 2022
