KOTA KINABALU – Former chief justice Tan Sri Richard Malanjum today confirmed his appointment as an ombudsman to the United Nations Security Council.
Malanjum, 69, said he is currently in Kuala Lumpur where he is apparently being briefed on his new role.
“I am currently busy preparing my documents and completing all arrangements.
“I think the office of the ombudsman would be in New York.
“We will see how it goes. Things will be much clearer once all matters are completed in a few days,” he said, stressing that he is currently overwhelmed in making preparations for his trip.
In a letter dated January 28, UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres informed the UN security council president that he had appointed Malanjum as the ombudsman.
Malanjum assumed his official functions as the UN Security Council’s ombudsman on February 14 this year.
He is the first East Malaysian to be appointed the ninth Chief Justice of Malaysia, having served the role from mid-2018 to April of 2019. – The Vibes, March 2, 2022
