GEORGE TOWN – The Penang police contingent is not spared from Covid-19 as 116 officers tested positive in the past week.
District police chief Soffian Santong told a press conference here that most of the affected personnel, who were boosted, are listed in Categories 1 and 2.
They have been ordered to observe home quarantine with immediate effect.
The virus also infected 134 family members of the affected personnel.
He said the high infection rates will not disrupt police duties, adding that the district headquarters will be sanitised, while all visitors need to observe the standard operating procedures here.
Earlier, the Penang Island City Council started to enforce weekly self-testing for its staffers, after 112 of its personnel were infected.
According to the CovidNow portal, Penang recorded 1,659 fresh cases as of midnight.
The state also recorded eight deaths, bringing the toll to 1,836.
A total of 96.3% of the cases are in home quarantine, while only 0.1% are ventilated and in intensive care.
Meanwhile, public health exco Dr Norlela Ariffin urged the public to remain cautious and abide by the standard operating procedures such as routine self-testing, and ensuring their children are vaccinated. – The Vibes, March 7, 2022
