KUALA LUMPUR – About 10% of construction sites in the country have been found to be in breach of Covid-19 standard operating procedures, the Dewan Rakyat heard today.
Deputy Works Minister Datuk Eddin Syazlee Shith said this is based on compliance checks conducted by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) since the start of the pandemic till October 18.
“CIDB has conducted checks on 7,704 construction sites. Based on its report, 6,923 sites complied with all Covid-19 SOPs, while 781 have been barred from operating for failure to comply.”
He was responding to a question from Ahmad Johnie Zawawi (GPS-Igan) on how many construction sites are abiding by the SOPs and allowed to continue operating, and how many have been issued stop-work orders.
To a supplementary question, Eddin said one of the main reasons behind the violations is site operators’ failure to fully understand the rules, leading to confusion.
“CIDB has taken the necessary measures to ensure all companies truly understand the SOPs, including by providing detailed information to every site.
“For companies that still refuse to abide by these procedures, of course, stern action will be taken against them, including issuing warnings and stop-work orders.” – The Vibes, November 11, 2020
