KUALA LUMPUR – Pictures of thick billowing smoke pouring out of premier shopping mall Pavilion have gone viral on social media as the public speculated on whether or not the building has caught on fire.

Fortunately, the truth was far less exciting. It was just roast duck.

To be more specific, it was merely the smoke coming from ducks being roasted over a woodfire, from a restaurant located within the mall’s premises.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the thick grey smoke seen in videos was caused by the apparent cooking technique, which later also set off the kitchen’s fire sprinkler system.

“The flames affected an estimated area of 5x5 sq ft and the source of the fire according to the premise owner was from the duck meat furnace;

“They were cooking the duck using wood; further investigations are ongoing,” Bomba said in a prompt statement.

It said the flames died down on its own before damaging the kitchen’s chimney and several roof tiles in the 2.12pm incident. No one was injured.

Social media posts showed thick grey smoke billowing from just above Pavilion KL’s main entrance block.
