KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian adult entertainer Siew Pui Yi has apologised after coming under fire for wearing Vietnam’s traditional dress for women in an erotic manner.
In a social media post that has since been deleted, Siew, who uses the moniker Ms Puiyi, had uploaded images of herself dressed in an “ao dai” without pants and revealing her undergarments.
The ao dai, a national dress of Vietnam, is usually worn with long pants.
Siew’s social media antics drew the wrath of Vietnamese netizens, with many demanding the adult entertainer, who was raised in Penang, respect their traditions or leave the country.
Vietnamese news agency VNE Express reported that Siew had posted two photos of herself wearing an ao dai without its trousers while releasing lanterns on the Hoai River, and the post quickly went viral.
It noted that many Vietnamese netizens decried it as “immodest” and “disrespectful”, and asked her to take down the images.
Siew, 23, was recently in the limelight when she became Malaysia’s first-ever Penthouse magazine cover model and appeared naked in its pages in December last year.
She has gained a huge following for her online posts, which include shots taken in the nude or with scanty clothing, and videos of graphic sexual acts.
VNE Express had also reported that the head of the Culture and Information Department of Hoi An, Tong Quoc Hung, as saying that the local authorities there were looking for Siew to remind her about Vietnam’s traditions and customs.
Under current Vietnamese law, using profanity, swearing, and wearing offensive or revealing clothes at festivals can attract fines up to VND500,000 (RM92).
Siew has since attempted to take control of the situation and issued an apology on social media.
On Facebook, she acknowledged that her previous post deeply offended the Vietnamese.
“I deeply and sincerely apologise for my actions/content and the disrespect to the traditional culture of Vietnam, to which I have now taken down.
“I have read each and every one of your comments and I do take it to heart, you are all amazing people and I absolutely loved my travels.
“I do hope to have another opportunity to be back in Vietnam and of course, take a different approach to shooting my content,” she said. – The Vibes, April 8, 2022
