SANDAKAN – Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong says the government is expecting airfares by Malaysian airline companies to reduce by August.
The Transport Minister explained at a press conference today that other than the increase in air-fuel prices, airfares have increased recently as the local companies still need to send their aircraft for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO).
The three-month MRO process is mandatory for aeroplanes that were left unused for a long period of time such as during the pandemic to ensure that the aircraft is safe to use.
“We also understand that these airlines have suffered a lot of losses during the pandemic.
“Nevertheless, the Transport Ministry through the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) will continue to monitor the airfare prices daily to ensure that there will not be any party taking advantage of the situation,” he said.
Wee also advised people to purchase their tickets earlier when planning to travel for the festive seasons to enjoy better prices.
“Don’t misunderstand this. The issue is, any airline company anywhere would charge more if one purchases a ticket too close to the actual departing date,” he added.
On the development of airports in Malaysia, Wee said that the ministry is working on the National Airport Strategic Plan which is expected to be completed mid-next year.
He said it will be a comprehensive plan that would include research on capacity, air capacity, flight frequency, and tourism potential of all 42 airports in Malaysia.
“When the report is completed, the ministry will be able to come up with a master plan.
“The report will identify which airports need to be upgraded. We will not gain anything from competing (between airports), especially when they are very close to one another,” he added. – The Vibes, June 12, 2022.
