KUALA LUMPUR – It was like a scene out of an action movie at the Johor-Singapore Causeway this morning when a trailer truck ferrying goods rammed through several vehicles stuck in traffic.
It is still unclear if anyone suffered injuries in the incident, although a video showed a number of vehicles heavily damaged from the crash.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong said his ministry has immediately initiated an investigation into the incident, while the driver is also understood to have already been arrested.
In a Facebook post today, Wee said police will be conducting a urine test on the lorry driver.
In the video recorded by another road user and which has since gone viral online, the trailer could be seen crashing against the back of several vehicles, including a bus and a van.
This is despite its brake lights lighting up, indicating that the driver might have attempted to stop the vehicle.
According to Johor Baru South police chief Raub Selamat, a total of 12 vehicles – six local and six foreign – that were headed for Singapore were involved in the 9.25am accident.
Harian Metro quoted him as saying that the accident was caused by a mechanical problem in the lorry ferrying wood dust into the republic.
“No lives were lost, but the crash caused damage to the other vehicles,” he said.
Raub said the driver has been detained to assist with investigations under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
According to Wee, the Road Transport Department (RTD) will also immediately conduct a probe under the Industry Code of Practice for Safe Working in a Confined Space 2010 (Icop).
“Once the RTD completes its Icop audit, stern action will be taken against the driver or the lorry company involved if they are found to have failed to adhere to existing provisions.
“This includes suspending the driver’s goods driving licence and the company’s permit, as well as other penalties under the act,” he said.
The minister added that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research will investigate the matter from the technical aspect to identify the cause of the accident.
“Those who were at the scene are asked to submit any evidence like video recordings, if they have any, to assist with the probe.
“I view cases like this very seriously and will not compromise with any quarters. Anyone found guilty will face the long arm of the law, as this involves the safety and lives of road users.” – The Vibes, July 7, 2022
