KANGAR – PKR will go all out to capture the votes of women and young people as it was the one that has led the crusade to fight for the rights of such groups, party vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said.
In this light, she wants 30% of the party’s candidates from these wings.
She said that PKR has actively mobilised various programmes for women and the young, especially when her mother Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was the party president and had served as deputy prime minister.
Nurul Izzah, who is Permatang Pauh MP, said that these segments of voters need special attention in view of the challenges afflicting the country.
It is not just about political challenges, but also about finding the right leadership to tackle climate change, public healthcare and creating jobs suitable for this era.
“It was due to PKR that now many parties have set aside a 30% quota of candidates from among the women and the young,” she told a press conference after visiting Perlis where she met Ayuh Malaysia movement volunteers here.
Nurul Izzah said that she also wants PKR to ensure that 30% of its candidates hail from the women and youth wings.
And she doesn’t mind if more parties are focusing on them after both PAS and Muda announced that 30% of their candidates would also be such groups.
“We welcome the competition and the interests of all political parties. It will be good for the women and young if more parties pay attention to their needs.”
She also announced that on September 25, PKR will organise a conference to champion the rights of women and the disabled.
Nurul Izzah was appointed as the PKR elections’ liaison chairman for the northern region states of Perlis, Kedah, and Penang.
She will be chairing a number of meetings in the next few weeks in view that elections may be near to finalise the candidates’ list for the region.
She spoke of the need to reignite another wave of support for PKR, which has been left reeling after a spate of defections amid a lingering sense of political unrest.
Lessons learned from it, the situation would see PKR screening their candidates carefully; the party only wants genuine leaders, who can continue with the reform needs and serve the people well instead of representatives, who are just self-centred, said Nurul Izzah.
Nurul Izzah is also keen to defend her Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, but she leaves it to the party’s leadership council to decide if she is qualified for it. – The Vibes, September 4, 2022
