PENAMPANG – Upko has urged the Election Commission to take steps to clean up the electoral roll after it found many voters suspiciously registered with only single-word names.
Party president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said he noticed that there were individuals in the roll identified by only one-word names and without surnames.
“There is a need for the electoral roll to be cleaned. We notice in Tuaran there are many with no surnames, only a single name,” he said, giving the example of one individual named only as “Zul”.
“We are not sure why (it is so),” he told reporters at the Upko headquarters in Donggongon here today.
“We would like to assume that someone with a MyKad would have a full name. You need a full name to go and vote, and these kinds of people should not be allowed to vote.
“The EC should take the necessary steps before November 19 when people go to vote,” he added, referring to polling day for the 15th general election.
“This is very important and very sensitive due to the automatic registration (of voters).”
Towards this end, Tangau said Upko has for a long time questioned the National Registration Department’s identity data.
Such dubious voters could already be inside the voters’ roll.
Tangau said this in view of the long-standing problem of dubious MyKads held by undocumented migrants in the state.

Meanwhile, Upko, which is a component of Pakatan Harapan (PH), will contest five federal seats, namely Tuaran, Penampang, Libaran, Beluran and Kimanis.
Tangau will be defending his Tuaran seat, while vice-president Datuk Ewon Benedick will vie for Penampang, women’s wing secretary Rowindy Lawrence will run in Kimanis, youth chief Felix Joseph Saang will contest in Beluran, and deputy secretary-general Peter Jr Naintin will mount a challenge in Libaran.
