KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Digital Ministry is investigating the data leak that affected five million AirAsia passengers and has ordered the airlines’s parent company to submit the relevant documents and data.

Minister Fahmi Fadzil said Capital A Bhd has been instructed to provide relevant computer data to facilitate the investigation.

He said the ministry takes the data leak seriously and an investigating team comprising members of the Personal Data Protection Department and CyberSecurity Malaysia has begun probing into the matter.

The investigation, which began on December 1, found that a cyber attack by a hacker group known as Daizin had occurred on AirAsia’s server system on November 12.

“Unauthorised access (to the server) led to ransomware attacks, potentially causing data leakage.

“Following the discussion, Capital A was instructed to submit supporting documents along with relevant computerised data evidence to facilitate investigations,” Fahmi said in a statement.

He said investigations were still ongoing on the cause of the attack and its impact, and the ministry was not yet at liberty to publicly disclose any findings.

Fahmi urged companies to constantly monitor and improve their cyber security, besides having a clear cyber security policy and ensuring they followed it. – The Vibes, December 10, 2022
