KUALA LUMPUR – The Umno general assembly today passed the no-contest motion for the party's top two posts via a near unanimous hand vote, said the party’s Terengganu liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Said.
Ahmad said the motion was only rejected by less than 10% of the delegates that attended the assembly today when the matter was put to vote.
The former Terengganu menteri besar also said the delegates agree that the no-contest motion would allow the party to consolidate its strength ahead of the coming six state elections expected to be held this year.
“We also do not want the party to be in disarray due to an intense internal poll,” he said during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre today.
Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil took to Facebook to confirm that all motions brought by all divisions from around the country, including the no-contest motion, received unanimous support from almost all delegates present at the assembly.
Ahmad however explained that party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had expressed his readiness to defend his position during the last Supreme Council meeting, but left the matter for the Umno delegation to decide.
Similarly, Ahmad explained that while the party constitution does not prevent any member from contesting any party position, any potential contenders looking to take the top two posts would go against the assembly’s decision.
Isham had yesterday confirmed that a supplementary motion was tabled in the party’s general assembly today to allow the top two positions to remain uncontested.
According to Isham, the motion was tabled by Negri Sembilan delegate Mohd Shukri Samsudin and supported by representatives from other states, including Terengganu and Selangor. – The Vibes, January 14, 2023
