IPOH – Police raided premises in Sitiawan yesterday suspected of electricity theft to conduct illegal bitcoin mining involving losses up to RM20,000.

Manjung police chief Nor Omar Sappi said the raid at about 9.30pm was carried out in collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) special technicians and succeeded in seizing 36 bitcoin mining machines.

“We have opened an investigation paper under Section 427 of the Penal Code and 37(1) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 for investigation and further action by police,” he said here today.

Meanwhile, police also opened an investigation paper over a brazen Chinese New Year display of firecrackers and fireworks in Simpang Pulai which went viral on Facebook.

Ipoh police chief Yahaya Hassan said the 13-minute 46-second long video went viral and attracted public views when it was lit on the road.

“A check showed the fireworks display was staged on Jan 23 at about 8pm in Kg Baru Simpang Pulai and a police report was made regarding the open show.

“We are investigating this case under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957 (Act 207) and Section 286 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum prison sentence of seven years or a fine of RM10,000 or both if convicted,” he said. – Bernama, January 25, 2023
