KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (Larut-PN) has asserted that there is no ill intent behind the bloc’s criticism of the government.
Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat today, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) secretary-general said that all disapproval expressed by the opposition should be seen as an attempt to ensure the nation remains on the right course.
“Reprimands made by PN are not intended to disturb the government, but to make sure that the country is managed correctly.
“Our criticism is not due to political differences (with the government) as we speak based on an acknowledgement of the importance of the ummah,” he said.
Referring to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s officiating speech yesterday, Hamzah said that the king’s message should be heeded by all parties, regardless of their political loyalties.
“(The Agong’s) decree that a stable nation can only be achieved through cooperation between the government and opposition is something that all MPs can agree on.
“Stability within the country cannot possibly be achieved if there are grudges between leaders, especially when they are part of the government together,” he said.
He added that the opposition has no qualms with backing positive decisions by the ruling administration, saying: “If there is any good from the government, then we will support them, God willing.”
Previously, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (Pagoh-PN) had said that PN will play a check-and-balance role in Parliament while voicing the people’s concerns, in line with the principle of parliamentary democracy.
He added that the Bersatu-led coalition will play a credible opposition and ensure that the government has integrity and is free of corruption.
Meanwhile, Hamzah said today that the unity government under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (Pagoh-PH) would do well to solidify its international relations with other countries.
“As a nation that practises an open economic system, Malaysia cannot avoid maintaining ties with all countries in the world, be they big or small.
“Any mistake in planning our geopolitical strategies will cause our country to lose out in terms of two-way political relations and socioeconomics,” he said, lauding Anwar for his firm stance condemning barbaric attacks by the Israeli regime against Palestinians.
Subsequently, Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (Machang-PN) insisted that Anwar clarify whether a statement he allegedly made 10 years ago on supporting efforts to protect the security of the Israeli state is currently relevant.
Lamenting the prime minister’s absence from the august House during Hamzah’s speech, Wan Fahysal suggested that Anwar address the matter once he makes his way into the lower House.
“The problem is that (Anwar) is not here (in the lower House), but if he is in later, I would like to ask that he please explain to the house whether he stands by his statement (on protecting Israel) from 10 years ago.
“Is the stand also part of the nation’s foreign policy?” he questioned.
In response, Hamzah labelled the statement as an “old story” as Anwar has since stated that he will defend the Palestinians in their fight. – The Vibes, January 14, 2023
