Economic powerhouse China a priority for M’sia: Anwar

BEIJING – The visit to China is a priority for Malaysia, the economic powerhouse being an immediate neighbour outside of the Asean region as well as the country’s largest trading partner, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. 

He reiterated the need to maintain a good relationship with all of Malaysia’s trading partners, especially in trade, business, and education.

“That is why I come to China first (outside of Asean) given the priority. China is a neighbour and trading partner. As a trading nation, we need to enhance bilateral ties with all, including the United States,” he told more than 200 guests comprising the Malaysian diaspora at an iftar event tonight at the Malaysian embassy here.

“I started my international visits with our immediate neighbours in Asean (after being appointed prime minister last November). The visit to Turkey was in the aftermath of the quake there while the trip to Saudi Arabia was for an umrah pilgrimage.”

Meanwhile, in his speech, Anwar said Malaysians abroad, in China or otherwise, have a role to play in strengthening bilateral ties as they “represent the nation”.

“You have my profound gratitude as all of you have helped establish good bilateral ties and facilitate diplomatic relations. 

“Malaysians in China are good examples and role models. Establishing and maintaining bilateral ties do not fall on the Foreign Ministry alone, but are the collective responsibility of government officials, the business community, conglomerates, and professionals here.”

He added that with a stable government and a healthy economy, the Malaysian government can resolve many issues such as social safety nets, economic growth, food security, technological advancement, and education.

He also brought up the criticism levelled by the opposition, saying that even though constructive advice is welcomed, Malaysia “cannot afford” for racial and religious tensions to disrupt the country’s social harmony.

Earlier this week, opposition lawmakers fiercely criticised Anwar for his official visit to Saudi Arabia.

They had pressed the prime minister to inform Parliament about the outcome of his visit, as he did not meet his counterparts there. – The Vibes, March 30, 2023
